I recently shot a series that combines lifestyle, comfort, confidence and clean aesthetics, shot on-location in a serene backyard of a home. These images I created aim to tell a story of a “morning routine.”
When shooting portraits, details are very important. Here are five tips that I always keep in mind while shooting portraits:

1. Environments Tell a Story
In the first image, the model stands in the middle of a doorway. The doorway creates a frame that isolates the subject, directing the viewer’s focus directly on the model. Additionally, look for reflections in windows or glass doors, as seen in this image. Such elements add depth and visual interest.
2. Play with Posing
Each image has a different pose but it all reflects effortless and relaxed. One image has the model lounging by the pool with his hands dangling in the water, the other shows him standing in the doorway and another one relaxed holding a mug. Utilize body language to shift the overall vibe. Although his fingers are dipped in the pool, it still gives a sense of movement. Don’t be afraid of stillness, it often speaks louder than action movements.

3. Symmetry and Lines
In the doorway images, his arms align with the frame of the door and the vertical lines of the door reflect the stripes on his pants. This creates a clean structured composition. Train your eye to notice symmetry and lines in your surroundings.
4. Unexpected Angles
In the image of the model lying by the pool, captured from a lower side angle. This perspective moves away from the typical standing or sitting portraits and it gives an editorial feel to the image. Consider getting low, climbing up on a ladder shooting down or tilting your camera. Altering your angles can make your image stand out.

5. Pay Attention to the Light
Soft, natural light is your best friend! Overcast skies ensure even exposure and eliminate harsh shadows. If it’s not overcast, try shooting from sunrise until 10am and 4pm until sunset for the best glow. If you have to shoot during high sun, look for open shade.
